Technical Analysis Mr brightside - The Killers

What have you learnt from this exercise? From this exercise I now look at music videos in an entirely different light, looking at certain shots, styles, expressionist views.

How long are the shots? The shots vary within this video, they range from long shots of the band, people dancing etc, and close up shots of reaction shots and lead singer/band faces (to help sell the band).

How are they cut? in this video, all of the cuts are just short, sharp, straight cuts, there are no fades or transitions, the only cut that wasnt a straight cut, was a whip pan into a close up of the lead singer.

What shot size is predominantly used? No shit size is predominantly used, they are mainly a combination of long shots and close ups.

How does the camera move? The camera is mainly static with short sharp cuts throughout. only one whip pan was notified.

Are there any long static shots? There are a couple of long static shots usually stemming from a long shot(band performance) zooming into a mid/close up (of the lead singer's face)

Relationship with lyrics/music? Yes, there is a relationship, this is because it is mainly a performance based video.

How is the narrative constructed? The narrative is constructed through the representation of the antagonist ( the man in the dresssing gown), and the protagonist ( the Lead singer) both fighting over one woman.

Are any types of performance shots repeated? The zooming in on the lead singer from the long shot of the band is repeated throughout the chorus. and the throwing of the apple by the antagonist. Not much apart from them.

What will you now use from this when planning your own work? Although being from the same genre i will use the shot angles, shot sizes in my own work that are seen in this vidseo. However because the pace of the song is entirely different to ours i cannot use the quick cutting technique seen in this video, i have however taken from this that i will need to use a much slower pace, less cuts and longer shot length.
