Institutional Research-Tom

What impact has the internet had on video consumption/ production?
The internet has had a massive impacting the way music and videos are consumed and produced. for a start the whole debate of illegal downloading can be included. there is also Youtube which you can which pretty much any video you want if u typein the title. this means we dont just have to watch tv and flick between channels in order to watch music tv, we can just watch it in bits as we want on demand. the video producers also have to allow that their video can be seen all around the worldso they have to be more careful in what content they use within the video.
Where downloading in invoilved, especiialy the illegal variety means people can get hold of the video for keeps, for free.
The site MySpace means that young and unsigned band can make their music and videos and broadcats it to the world on this sight so that music producers and companies can swopp in and use there music and help make them famous. it is a big glorified music channel for anyone who wants to make and display there music,no matter what the quality may be.

Technical Analysis Mr brightside - The Killers

What have you learnt from this exercise? From this exercise I now look at music videos in an entirely different light, looking at certain shots, styles, expressionist views.

How long are the shots? The shots vary within this video, they range from long shots of the band, people dancing etc, and close up shots of reaction shots and lead singer/band faces (to help sell the band).

How are they cut? in this video, all of the cuts are just short, sharp, straight cuts, there are no fades or transitions, the only cut that wasnt a straight cut, was a whip pan into a close up of the lead singer.

What shot size is predominantly used? No shit size is predominantly used, they are mainly a combination of long shots and close ups.

How does the camera move? The camera is mainly static with short sharp cuts throughout. only one whip pan was notified.

Are there any long static shots? There are a couple of long static shots usually stemming from a long shot(band performance) zooming into a mid/close up (of the lead singer's face)

Relationship with lyrics/music? Yes, there is a relationship, this is because it is mainly a performance based video.

How is the narrative constructed? The narrative is constructed through the representation of the antagonist ( the man in the dresssing gown), and the protagonist ( the Lead singer) both fighting over one woman.

Are any types of performance shots repeated? The zooming in on the lead singer from the long shot of the band is repeated throughout the chorus. and the throwing of the apple by the antagonist. Not much apart from them.

What will you now use from this when planning your own work? Although being from the same genre i will use the shot angles, shot sizes in my own work that are seen in this vidseo. However because the pace of the song is entirely different to ours i cannot use the quick cutting technique seen in this video, i have however taken from this that i will need to use a much slower pace, less cuts and longer shot length.

Technical Analysis -Tom

What have you learnt from this exercise? In the duration of analyzing "Stumble and Fall" by Razorlight i found that when you actually watch a music video intensely, all the shots are actually very short, and snappy, nothing is shown for too long before the camera changes, keeping you on your toes whilst watching it. i also generously underestimated the amount of shots used to create just 3 minutes of footage. I've also learnt that watching a video over and over really puts you off the song!
How long are the shots? The majority of the shots in this video were short and snappy, around 1-3 seconds, and even when there was a longer shot, it was a montage of shorter snippets of footage combined. The short and snappy shots that are used add a illusion of speed to the song and keeps the viewer wanting more.
What shot size is predominantly used?
The video is crammed with close ups and mid shots, but every now and then cutting away to a long shot of the band in their entirety, but an observation i made was that the long shot used was always the same shot at the same distance and angle, where as the close ups and mid shots were varied intensely. The majority of the close ups were on the face of the lead singer, Johny Farrell and if the close ups were on the other band members it tended to be on their instruments instead. the lead singer close ups are crucial, as they are the meat of the video, allowing recognition.
How does the camera move?

during the video the camera is only ever static on the long shots, on all the other shots it will glide from side to side or in a kind of handy cam fashion get in and around the band members. this movement is what makes the video exciting, and fluid, constant movement attracts constant attention.
Are there any long static shots?
Long in duration, no, but long in distance yes. All the long shots in this video are static but very short and snappy, thrown in amongst the close ups and mid shots
Relationship with lyrics/music?
The lyrics and music are all as one, in time and we can evidently see the lead singer and band playing and singing the music and lyrics. as this is a performance video ti is purely showing off the bands talent and skill of their instrumental prowess.
Are any types of performance shots repeated?
No shots are directly taken and used twice but some shots are very similar, for example the close ups on the lead singer are the same sort of distance but from slightly varied angles.
What will you now use from this when planning your own work?
I will take into account the sheer amount of shots and footage needed to make a classy video and that they shorter and snappier, the better, in terms of performance filming. the lighting in the video really does make it what it is as well, so when planning to shot i will take that into account.

Institutional Research - Audience - Mikey

- Developments in technology have allowed music videos to be consumed by audiences via various different types of media.
- Websites such as MySpace, Youtube, and other forms of media such as music television channels, there are now 19 or 20 different channels which are split into the different genres of music to create a larger target audience.
- Youtube is obviously accessed through the Internet, and allows anyone to upload their own videos, whether they are home made or done in a studio, for any one else to consume at will. it can also be accessed by mobile phones and more recently, iPods.
- MySpace is again a similar process, with signed and unsigned bands able to upload their new tracks and videos onto the sight for their fans to view, as well as music production companies thingys [i've forgotten the word] that sign the bands.
- Music Television is available on many digital, sky, and cable connections and has several channels of different genres. they play music videos of a variety of different bands almost 24-7, however these are mainly the more recognised bands.
- videos are often made available as extras on the artists singles and albums on CD.

Focus Group - ideas/findings - Mikey & Tom

This is the Place - Red Hot Chili Peppers

- varied musical style - fused traditional rock and funk with various elements of heavy metal, punk rock and psychedelic rock.
- use of handicam to show 'junkie' effect.
- need an isolated location.
- when heavy bass is played a definite close up on strumming of bass guitar during performance
- use of crazy characters, such as giant animals or clowns.(surrealism)
- drug induced visions.
- use of lyrics edited in to the shots during the chorus in particular.
- performance shots are a must.
- band includes drummer, guitarist, bassist and lead vocalist.
- use of a bridge, as one is featured in some of their videos in relation to Keidis' meta-narrative.
- need to create a separate narrative for the video, obviously junkie is the key theme to the song/lyrics.
- possible narrative ideas: evident talk of a baby or pregnancy, with relevance to "A mash of dna"
- the lyrics are clear in the song: shocking, appalling, devils, junkie, wolverine, to pick out a few. this therefore gives us a headstart on writing a narrative for the video, as these have particularly clear images associated with them.

When the mood board was shown to the group they agreed with what we had thought up, such as the example locations and colours.

Technical Analysis - Evaluation - Mikey

'I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor' - The Arctic Monkeys

What have you learnt from this exercise?

From analysing the video to ‘I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor’ by the Arctic Monkeys, I have learnt that, even though there are 40-50 shots in this particular video and I originally thought this was a lot, most other videos have many, many more shots than that, over 200 even. Moreover, this means that making a music video is going to be a lot harder than I first expected. I have also learnt that the filming is going to take a lot more time than first anticipated.

How long are the shots?

Most of the shots in ‘I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor’ are approximately four or five seconds long, with some up to eight seconds and others as short as one second.

What shot size is predominantly used?

Mid shots and close ups are most predominantly used in this video, and this is because the video is one solely based on performance. Meat is a key technique of this video, with several repeated close up shots of the lead singer, Alex Turner, singing, emphasising the voice as the most important part.

How does the camera move?

There are several shots in which the camera pans from left to right, and vice versa, and occasionally there are shots that do both in the one shot. Zoom is used a lot, both in and out, when switching between the band members performing on stage.

Are there any long static shots?
There are one or two long static shots, however the long shots, in the most part, pan around or zoom in.

Relationship with lyrics/music?

There is no relationship between the lyrics and the visuals as there is no narrative to the video. However, there is a relationship between the music and the visuals as the cuts are frequently edited in time to the cadence of the music.

Are any types of performance shots repeated?

As the video is merely performance based, most of the shots throughout the video are repetitive. Moreover, it is clear that there are five or six set cameras around the stage and the video switches cameras to get a different view and perspective of the performance.

What will you now use from this when planning your own work?

From analysing this video, I have seen a video that is purely based around performance, which furthermore gives me an insight into the performance side of things when filming these type of shots in our video. This is especially appropriate as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the band whose song the group are using, always have performance shots of some sort in their videos.
The actual analysis itself is in the group folder.

Will's moodboard

Audience Research - Will

Methodology-(quantitative or qualatative)
We will use qualitative research in the form of a focus group, we will use this particular research method because it offers us a opportunity to field our ideas to people in great detail who are in our target audience and produce valid answers so we can enter a state of verstehen with our target group.

Purpose: (what are we testing? What are you expecting from your research)

The purpose of our research is to find out ideas pitched by our target group, this will give us ideas. we will also be able to pitch our own ideas and see if our ideas bear well with our target audience.

Sample audience-(Who? How many? Demographic info)

Our target audience will be people who appreciate the rock genre and other Red Hot Chili peppers tracks. Our sample will be fairly small so we can achieve high validity and depth within our research.

Media stimulus-(tracks, videos etc) When we conduct our group interview, we will be showing them our track, other tracks from the same genre/artist, our mood board, and our storyboard.

Questions-( list questions, are they open/closed?)
Our questions will be open answered questions, this is because with qualitative unstructured interviews, we want to find in depth qualitative data in which we can take and apply it to our work.

What ideas have you seen from listening to our track?
How does our track offer us narrative opportunities?
We were thinking of doing ............... do you agree? Can you offer us any ideas into how we could modify this?

HOOSE

HOOSEY you need to complete "This is the place Analysis" Goodwin's analysis is incomplete.x

Mood board (contd)

When i constructed my mood board i took into account the song lyrics; "this is the place", Junkie", "shocking appalling"; these are all key lyrics to the song . Particularly on the bottom half of the mood board; the colours are dark, blurred and have general connotations of intoxication, and the overall mood is a depressing one. All of the images in the mood board bear some significance, for example, the the woman sitting on the curb will be based on a typical male gaze which will be used in our video. The overly saturated image of the alleyway behind the woman could play a part in the video also, as it is dark and gloomy symbolic of where the "junkies go". The needle also anchors the lyrics of the song "junkie", and the bass guitar which is dominant throughout the track. The mood dramatically changes though, because throughout there is a gigantic crescendo which flips from gloomy to more perussion and singing; the ones which have most meaning, allows the audience to recognize the reality of the song itself. I have also included a number of contextual more iconic images including a cutout filtered image of a London alleyway, representing the loneliness aspect of the suburbs of busy capital. Overall i believe this mood board is a good adaptation of many of Red Hot Chili Peppers lyrics and videos. it has many different readings for all audiences. The themes and ideas generated by RHCP music aren't all evident in this piece because this song could be seen as an anomolie of their mainly upbeat music.

- The company has also started to represent freelance directors for commercials and other productions.
- The nature of the business has grown from being a production and effects company, solely producing animation, to a full service company with sought-after directors.
- It now produces both classical 2-D animation, CGI and 3D-animation, as well as live-action and mixed media.

-Some of these videos have been awarded at the MTV Music Video awards and nominated for Grammies in the US.
- The goal for the company is to continue to produce high-quality films and commercials, and to become one of the world´s leading design, animation and filmmaking companies.

Strict Machine - Goldfrapp

- 'Strict Machine' is an electronic dance song written by British group Goldfrapp and Nick Batt for their second studio album Black Cherry (2003).
- It was produced by Goldfrapp and describes laboratory rats in neuroscience experiments.
- The song's music video, a mixture of graphic and live action segments, builds upon the art direction featured on the band's album and single covers.
- Throughout the video, Alison Goldfrapp is surrounded by black and white animated backgrounds, wolf-headed dancers, and colourful butterflies.
- The video uses kaleidoscopic layouts and dense graphic designs.
- The settings' architecture is inspired by the work of Archigram.
- Goldfrapp and her back-up dancers were filmed in London against a bluescreen.
- The animated sequences were done by Odell's Filmtecknarna studio in Stockholm, Sweden.
- the video is representative of the dance genre, with no narrative but with women dancing seductively, as well as lots of bright colours and fast camera movements.
- the video is disjunctured, and has no obvious narrative.
- it is concept based, with little or no performance except miming involved in the video at all.
- there is lots of 'meat!' with many close ups of Goldfrapp.
- dismemberment is a visual style of Odell's, and is used again in this particular video as parts of Alison's body are seperated and put into the animated background.
- the notion of looking is applicable to this video as well, with voyeuristic treatment of the female dancers and their bodies.

Rocket - El Presidente

- this was the first single from El Presidente.
- the video shows a slightly different style of Odell that is seen in videos such as 'Take Me Out' by Franz Ferdinand, 'Shot You Down' by Audio Bullys, and Goldfrapp's 'Strict Machine'.
- this is because the video is much more performance based than the others.
- the video also includes some sort of narrative with one of the band members pictures flying on an anmated rocket to the lyrics of 'fly like a rocket'.
- this shows that there is a relationship between the lyrics and visuals.
- there is also a relationship between the music and visuals as the editing is done in time to the beat of the music.
- there is a lot of close ups of the lead singer during the lyrics, emphasising the fact that the voice is seen as the most important part of music.
- the video is full of a variety of bright colours which is appropriate to the music as it is an upbeat and happy song.

Storyboard

the story board is complete but i can't work out how to upload it on here so i'll just print it out instead it'll be much easier.
xxx

When selecting images for the story board, i looked at a handful of different videos from within the sam genre to look for shots that i liked and we could possibly include in our video. i looked at Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out, conveniently directed by one of the auteurs i looked at. the video is crazy and has a variety of different ideas and concepts to look at. Sex On Fire - Kings of Leon, i just love this song plus there are some good close up shots and lots of dismemberment, as well as a shot of one of the band members strumming his guitar rather nicely. Plus a couple of the Red Hot Chili Peppers videos as we are doing one of their songs i wanted a shot of the band themselves, and found a couple!

Challenging dominant ideologies - Mikey

Challenging Ethinicity

Eminem - Sing For The Moment

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=12wvV39aFc4

- "Sing for the Moment" is one of Eminem's most lyrically praised singles.

- It deals with the themes of rap music's effect on society and the misunderstanding that critics and parents have towards his message.

- 'These ideas are nightmares to white parents. Whose worst fear is a child with dyed hair and who likes earrings. Like whatever they say has no bearing, it's so scary in a house that allows no swearing.'

- Eminem uses the song to refute critics who have accused him of promoting violence to young people, saying that committing a crime is ultimately up to the offender.

- He also explains that his music has an advantage to young people, claiming that his music is a relief from boredom and depression.

- 'That's why we sing for these kids, who don't have a thing. Except for a dream, and a fuckin' rap magazine. Who post pin-up pictures on their walls all day long
Idolize they favorite rappers and know all they songs. Or for anyone who's ever been through shit in their lives. Till they sit and they cry at night wishin' they'd die. Till they throw on a rap record and they sit, and they vibe.'

- Eminem's altercation with a bouncer named John Guerrera is also referenced in this song.

- 'you're full of shit too, Guerrera, that was a fist that hit you.'

- Also, in Eminem's song, 'Without Me', he lampoons comparisons of himself to Elvis Presley as a White succeeding commercially in a predominantly African-American art form in rapping.

Challenging Gender

Violent Delights - I wish i were a girl

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=0-Ehsx5-dq0

- The group use the song as a way of expressing their sexual frustration.
- 'I wish I was a girl so I'd see more tits'
- as well as, 'I don't care about the blood, I don't care about the pain'
- However, they claim they are not homosexual, moreover, the connotations are that if they were women, they would be homosexual.
'Some people think I might be gay. But I don't swing the other way. I just wanna be a girl so damn much. To fell my clit as it gets...'
- Furthermore, as the song reaches its conclusion, it is realised that being a girl isn't so great.
- 'But if I was a girl I couldn't drive no more. Cos I couldn't tell the difference between the clutch and the door. I'd get mood swings and I'd have to shave my pits.'

challenging dominant ideologies WW

Challenging Gender
Lady sovereign- love me or hate me
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=H1sHAX2F4PE

alot to say about this video in terms of revolting against gender conventions:

-"I got hairy armpits, but I don't walk around like this.I wear a big baggy t-shirt that hides that nasty shit"- typical lyrics found in her song "love me or hate me that revolt against generic ideologies typically suggested about women.

- "Never had my nails done.Bite them down until they're numb."- another quote reinforcing her counter cultural ideas, many girls enjoy and take passion in doing their nails and looking pretty- not seen in this viedo.

-"I don't like drinking fancy champy,I'll stick wit Heineken beers.Whoops, might burp in ya face,A little unlady-like,What can I say?"- typical- generic conventions of women is to be feminine abd not to burp or drink beer but to drink wine and "champy" but once again Lady Sov revolts.

- In the video there is a short scene when she throws out her dead hamster, this reinforces counter gender culture when the "typical woman" looking pretty and very feminine looks at her in a way that she thinks that lady sov is disgusting and barbaric.

- Another example of her challening gender stereotypes would be her wearing big baggy mens t-shirts,reinforces the ladette culture that lady sov could be seen as the face of.

Challenging Ethnicity

Goldie lookin' chain- Guns dont kill people rappers do.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=xv-2XYOtgCg

In many hip hop videos, they usually feature black afro-american man dancing showing off their bling, cars, money etc, however in this video by Goldie Looking Chain, they flip that conventions round like in vanilla ice's video ice ice baby, singing about typical black street culture and wearing clothes (mise-en-scene) typical to the black american culture in a parodic fashion, could this be seen as a taking the mickey out of black culture?

This is the place Analysis- Tom

From discussion in class about our track the following ideas cropped up :

- evident city narrative , under a bridge???EG "Sun goes Down" -Arctic Monkeys
-possible black and white look on the video
- blurry camera, relevance to "junkies"
- narrative ideas includes getting someone pregnant, not begin able to deal with it but underneath wants to keep it-drug problems
-2:30mim an obvious change of pace in song, change in the narrative?
- use of fade transititions, slow song,no need for choppy cuts

Deconstruction acoording to Mr Goodwin

1. The genre of RHCP is rock.the generic conventions and characteristics include band playing, narrative, lead singer, unorthodox transitions into the next shot, and ofcourse close-ups. from the reasearch into my genre videos i have done i notice that alot of the videos, even if there is a anrrative theme, will still cut between the band rocking out, and the narrative story.i feel our video could do with a narrative story.

2. The lyrics used are very narrativable? and could be easily translated into visuals, as we have started to do in our moodboard. we will take an illustrative approach to our video as we want to show the performance for what it is, without amplifying it or distorting it too much.

3. the music has some very specific areas in which can be used in the visuals really well, for example when the deep bass is played there will evidently be a close-up of a bass guitar being played in a band set up. also around 2/3 into the song there is a change in tone, pitch and speed of the song, we will use this as a turning point in our visuals as well as in the music so it links in well.

4. Obviously, being a rock genre, and evident in almost all music videos, close-ups are essential, we need to allow the audience to become familier with the band and reconise each member for who they are and what they do. familiarity and repeatability is the key to a music videos sucess in this day and age. as we have not started our camera work yet we have not discussed any styles or particualr ways in which we are going to film the video but i feel taking a different and unique stylistic approach will really make the video a hit.

5. as we can see in the RHCP video, "Can't Stop" the use of notion of looking is used in the curved corner mirror in which we see the lead singer singing into it, warping his image and making the video alot mor einteresting, i feel it would be nice to add some of these themes into our video to create a sense of familiarity with the music we are using.

6. Intertextual refrences within music videos work well and have been known to be a success so looking into that area of ideas will definatly be thought about. as we are using some narratvie within our video we will definatly research similar themed storylines to get ideas.

HALF TERM - Charmer-Kings of Leon - Tom Howse

Key Features of a music video- Kings of Leon- Charmer

1. This music video is of the genre indie rock, in which we see a stage performance from the band. The rock genre is usually linked with band performances, as the song is keyed into the instrumental prowess of the individuals, whereas boy band is more dance routines and image, not evident in this video It is merely the band showing their talents and playing their instruments. There notion of looking in this video is very evident as we can see no audience, the lead singer is singing and looking directly into the camera and the whole band is facing the camera.

2. the use of close-ups in this video is crucial. When emphasis is put on either the singing or an instrument being played , a close up will be used on either the instrument of the person playing it. Long shots are also used to set the scene, showing the whole stage and the band on it. The use of changing focus is also used often in this video. When the camera is showing on particular person the other members will still be in the background but out of focus, showing emphasis on the one man, as well as reminding the audience it’s a band performance. The beat of the music is fast and the editing has been done so in fast cuts to link in with the music, chopping from person to person, instrument to instrument. The camera cuts to a different angle every time the drummer he hits the snare drum.

3. In this video the band are shown for whom they are, an honest music playing band, there is no evident address of their meta-narrative. They play their instruments and sing in a very memorable style, used throughout their career, so singing this video is recognisable of Kings of Leon’s style at which they work.

4. The visuals are clearly linked with the sound as we can see the band is singing and playing along to the music. The lyrics are not in parallel with the lyrics though, as what they are singing about is not shown in the video. There is no narrative to this video, instead it is illustrative of the band. The camera is also linked with the music in the way in which when the lead singer screams, the camera vibrates a little, adding emphasis onto the music itself, a sense of ambience.
5. in a way this video could be seen as harking back to the days when nearly all of the first music videos where performance videos on a stage, and we can see it is being performed in an old theatre

6. This is mainly a commercial video, showing the band and advertising them for what they are best at. It is not just advertising the music they play, but their image as well. This video is not arty as it is only a simple stage performance.

7. This video doesn’t really focus on social groups too much, the performers appear to be of middle class white social background and the music audience is aimed at a similar target audience, it neither addresses social context in the video nor argues with it.

9. This video would mainly be viewed on narrowcast channels such as MTV2, however it has a pop element and was high in the charts so will also be played on broadcast channels and pop/chart channels. The video is not the most drawing video to watch, as it is merely a performance, so ambience viewing is probably the main form of consumption, as its easy listening whiles doing other things.

This particular video demonstrates definate rock genre characteristics, e.g. the use of band, guitars, drums , and lead singer. use of CGI and green screen is seen in many videos in the rock/indie genre, another example of Computer Generated Imagery in the rock genre would be "Zephyr Song" by Red Hot Chilli Peppers. the

2. Relationship between lyrics and visuals

There is a definate relationship between lyrics and visuals in this video like most of Oddel's videos. for example, the lead singer singing the song throughout the song, in the 1st verse when there is a clip of his head on a robot's body(1.30 mins), this shows that there is a distinct relationship between the lyrics and visuals.

3. Relationship between music and visuals

Odell uses post production digital effectss and editing techniques to show that there is a relationship between the music and the visuals. an example of the special effects having a relationship with the music is the metal leg tapping on the ground to the beat of the song (2.43 mins). and example of the editing techniques being in time with the music would be the zooming in and out, the sharp cuts (1.42 mins) which are in time with the music. It's a montage of imagesthat have been put together in a strange, abstract way. That's what gives the video that strange, jerky, style that goes in time with the music.

4. Close-ups of star?

The demands of the record label have definately included lots of close-ups of the artist in this video, frequantly zooming in and out getting shots of his face and mouth. This is because the lead singer is the face of the band and needs to be reference frequently otherwise the bands sales would go down, the Franz Ferdinand brand has also been reinforced by the use of CGI by giving them robot bodies.

5. Notion of looking??

Not much notion of looking, mainly focussing on the star rather than his perspective

6. Intertextual References

Weezer -Undone( The sweater song) Spike Jonze

This is a performance based video but has a few abstract feels to it. it shows thebanmd playing there music as they usually do but a pack of dogs run across the set, unexpected and nothing to do with the lyrics. There is an obvious relationship between lyrics and visuals as it is a video of the and playing the peice of music. the camera moves in and around the band and lots of close-ups of the indivudual stars are seen, as in the chorus it goes into the lead singer's face.

The camera is used in a very unique fashion in this music video. it is one fluid constant handicam shot with no editing or cutting, it ducks and weaves in and out of the band as they play going in and around each musician in turn, combining many different camera techniques. the video looks as if it could be shot in slow motion but it is just the way in which Weezer move when playing their instruments. it is shot in a basic studio and it is dont in the style of a sort of home video as the cameraman is walking around with the camera, entering the set through the front door and then leaving the set at the end.

RHCP - By The Way [Mikey]

- The narrative of the video is about the lead singer, Anthony Keidis, calling for a taxi.
-He gets in the taxi and the cabbie realises who he is and plays the song, 'By The Way', to please him.
- the cab driver then goes crazy and starts driving like a maniac, causing Anthony to be distressed, and subsequently then pages other band members, John and Flea, who at first think the call is a hoax, but when Keidis pages for a second time, they realise it is more serious and chase the cab, and Anthony then breaks out of the can window and into Flea's truck.
-the video ends with the other member of the Chilis, Chad, calling for the same cab, and the cabbie again realises he is a member of the Chilis, and drives off with him.
- The video starts off with lots of dismemberment of the different members of the band.
- it begins with shots from a narrative, before cutting to a performance shot, and then back to the narrative again.
- there are many close ups of the ban members during the performance part of the video, as well as long shots of the band playing there instruments together, the iconic band shot.
- the editing is done as such as it is in time to the beat of the music
- the video includes the stylistic band shot as well as the lead singer, Anthony Keidis, in his traditional 'shirt-off' role, which recurs in almost all of the Chili Peppers work.
-'Speed!' is used in the video shown by the camera movement, aand fast montage editing during the car chase sequences.
- this creates a visually decentred expreience necessary for music video consumption, and creating repeatability.
- there isn't anything that shows the notion of looking, with there specifically being no females invlolved in the narrative of the video.
- there is an intertextual reference to 'Under The Bridge' also by the Red Hot Chili Peppers in the video for 'By The Way', as the taxi drives literally, under the bridge, which is the same bridge as shot in the video for 'Under The Bridge' where Anthony struggles with drugs and amost ended his life.
- another intertextual reference is the fast and often jerky camera angles used in the high speed chase sequences, which are based on the 2000 Mexican film Amores Perros in which all the characters are linked by a car crash at the beginning of the film, before the crash is an almost identical high speed car chase sequence.
- the book that Anthony holds in his hand at the beginning is Lexicon Devil which is a biography of his earlier influence, The Germs.
- the music and video are related as the taxi driver starts driving like a mad man as the first beat starts to drop, and goes crazy with his driving.
- the narrative is disjunctured and therefore has no relationship with the lyrics, yet shows them in their traditional, crazy, wild and whacky form. the video seems to ignore the original song and give it a whole new set of meanings.
- contrary to the music video, the song's lyrics tells an ambiguous story of a girl named Dani. The story had been gradually developing throughout a 7 year time period, starting with 'Californication', in which the lyrics refer to an unnamed 'Teenage bride with a baby inside'. This story was continued in 'By the Way', and has since concluded in 'Dani California'.

Right.......... only done 1 lesson on this video stuff so here it goes

Happy birthday Anthony Keidis

This particular video demonstrates genre/band characteristics by using unorthodox visuals that together as a narrative doesn't make sense, Red Hot Chilli Peppers apparently took a different viewpoint when film in this particular video, the visuals, narrative and the notion of looking was based on German Expressionism. At the introduction of the video, the notion of looking is reffered to when the doctors are operating and the room spins round, this suggests drunkenness or under the influence of some sort of drug giving an anesthesic effect.Throughout this particular video it shows them in a different light, not being crazy, expressive and outgoing, but as a more relaxed band, singing about love and expressing his love through unorthodox lyrics " a Scarlet starlet and shes in my bed, a candidate for my soul mate bled"

The use of close-ups in this particular video is essential. Emphasis is put on either the singer or an instrument being played ( although instruments arent being played on the video, just objects that can relate to the instrument e.g. the rope for the bass guitar), a close up or med shot will be used on either the instrument of the person playing it. Long shots are also used to establish the setting, mood, showing the location and people in the location. In this video, the camera is oftenly zooming in and out, showing emphasis on the one man, reinforcing a band performance.

There is a definate relationship betweeen the music and the visuals, although they are not acturally playing the instruments; they are however using different tools that symbolise the instrument that is being played, e.g a rope for the bass guitar, (2.37), and also editing techniques are also in time with the drum beat.
In the performance scenes, (usually of the lead singer (Anthony)) are in full view, there are close ups on the faces of Anthony who is somewhat solemn in this particular video; the ideas created in this video aren't repeated in any of RHCP's other videos.
The video includes a number of intertextual referances, although it doesnt conform to Anthony Keidis' star persona, the messy hairstyles, and odd garments, contibute tho the rock scene and therfore add to the bands persona and meta-narritve. This allows the audience to immediatly recognize the genre the band and consequently, adding a relevant meaning to the song.
Unfortunately throughout this particular video there isnt any notion of looking, apart from when he is lying down and seems to be being operated on (1.20), however this is used as a transition technique and cuts to him lying underneath the dragon and introduces the 1st chorus.
This video is unlike other RHCP videos, and is not one of the main songs that are associated withing the red hot chili peppers brand. It would be consumed both ambiently and focused dependant on the person watching it, which means readings would vary (negotiated reading). In my opinion can and cannot be considered art, although it would be consumed ambiently as it has a catchy rift and recognizable chorus which one may sing along to. this song also has been influenced by german expressionism so art and culture have been used to produce this video.
